A Local Adventure: Rediscovering Skiing at Windham Mountain Resort

Living just 20 minutes from Windham Mountain Resort, my wife and I decided it was time to embrace the winter wonderland right in our backyard. For years, the idea of hitting the slopes was always there, but life and excuses seemed to get in the way. This year, we decided to change that and dive into an adventure together. What followed was a day filled with laughter, clumsy moments, and memories we’ll cherish forever.

Gearing Up for the Slopes

Before heading to the mountain, we took some time to go shopping for the essentials. As anyone who’s ever skied knows, having the right gear is half the battle. We browsed through stores, selecting skis, boots, jackets, and all the layers we’d need to stay warm and comfortable. My wife, who’s originally from Colombia, found the whole process exciting—though admittedly, putting on layers and heavy boots was a brand-new experience for her.

With our gear in hand and spirits high, we arrived at Windham Mountain Resort. The place was buzzing with families, seasoned skiers, and plenty of first-timers like us. The towering slopes, the sound of skis slicing through snow, and the crisp mountain air set the perfect scene.

The Bunny Slope Chronicles

I hadn’t been on skis in decades, and for my wife, it was her first time ever. We decided to take it slow—really slow—and started at the base of the bunny slopes. Let’s just say it wasn’t exactly graceful at first. Between figuring out how to clip into the skis and just trying to stay upright, there was a lot of laughter (and a lot of falling).

Walking in skis? Harder than it looks. Sliding in skis? Even harder. But we didn’t care. My wife, with her radiant smile and adventurous spirit, was determined to give it her all. She’d never seen snow like this back in Colombia, so just being surrounded by a winter wonderland was magical for her.

Falling, Laughing, and Learning

One of the highlights of the day was the countless times we fell—sometimes separately, but often together. There’s something uniquely hilarious about tumbling over, arms and legs tangled, skis pointing in every direction, and then trying to get back up without sliding further downhill. At one point, we were laughing so hard we couldn’t stand, and a kind instructor passing by offered us some tips to regain our footing.

By mid-afternoon, we were sweating from the effort and had to peel off a few layers despite the cold weather. Skiing, it turns out, is no joke when it comes to cardio! But as challenging as it was, we started to get the hang of it. My wife managed to glide a short distance without falling, and I felt a flicker of confidence returning from my long-ago ski days.

A New Adventure Together

As the day went on, we realized skiing isn’t just about the activity itself—it’s about the joy of trying something new, the shared experience, and the memories you create along the way. Windham Mountain Resort, with its friendly atmosphere and beautiful scenery, felt like the perfect place to start this new chapter in our lives.

We wrapped up our day with steaming cups of hot cocoa at the lodge, reflecting on how much fun we’d had. Sure, we didn’t conquer the mountain, but we conquered our fears of trying something new—and had a blast doing it.

Looking Ahead

This was just the beginning. Living so close to Windham Mountain Resort, we’re excited to keep practicing and maybe, just maybe, graduate from the bunny slopes one day. For now, we’re embracing the falls, the laughs, and the journey.

Whether you’re a seasoned skier or a total beginner like us, there’s something special about getting out there, challenging yourself, and enjoying the beauty of winter. We can’t wait to see where this adventure takes us next.

If you’re considering trying something new, take it from us—it’s worth every tumble and every laugh along the way.
